Random Boat Facts, why a Boat bathroom is called a head

Yacht Connections: Boat Bathroom; why is it called the “head”?

“The bathroom of a maritime vessel is known as the head because of its location aboard vessels in the bow or fore of the ship, as explained by the Naval Heritage and History Command. The term first appears in 1708 in Woodes Rogers’ book, “A Cruising Voyage Around the World.” Source Ask.com

“Now, with various forms of engine power plus holding tanks and manual or powered pumps, the “head” can be anywhere. But the name stuck”. Source Toilet-Guru (who knew someone would think so much about toilets, there is a whole website dedicated to them!)

You may think it is funny or wonder why a Yacht company would be writing about Boat toilets aka Heads…well it is funny…and many people post their boat experiences on YouTube…like Spud Hilton’s experience of the Bad Latitude blog at SFGate.com.

Did you know there is foldaway toilets on some boats…and there is even instructional videos on using boat heads…

So next time you are taking a tour of a boat or considering a boat for your next event…don’t forget to think about the “head”…to avoid funny YouTube features…

Or else you can charter with Yacht Connections and never have to think about it again… The California Spirit Yacht has 5-luxury full-size bathrooms, with hand towels replenished through out your Yacht cruise and fresh white orchids and original Art work in each…(also, no instructions required for use!).
